Weekly Journal(3)

This week we learnt about photography and about how much thought goes into only the photos. We learnt about the angles and lighting techniques and what each shot denotes. On this information we thought about what we want to feature in our magazine and clicked photos that were potential candidates. We used Photoshop to make our own school magazine cover and contents page using the photos we clicked.

School Magazine Contents Page





This is a rough draft of my school magazine's contents page. I have tried to maintain the house style and written down a few of the sections. The text 'Contents' is in bold to catch the readers eye and it's background is an image of the featured article.I have used a simple text font to show simplicity and casualness. I also have two other pictures of the other important articles in the magazine. Through this page i'm trying to show class as well as casualness.(Like a mixture)

School magazine Cover






This is a draft of my school magazine cover.(I have used black and blue as the main house style). 
I have tried to show that the school is a mixture of conventions and modern adaptations.
The right side shows the new part of the building while the left shows the old which is why i decided on this to be my cover picture.In this picture no students or teachers can be seen which shows the discipline of the school during lessons.I have tried using the left third more and have put the regent high logo there as well so it could be the first thing you would see and the magazine could be identified easily.
I've used a very simple font for the article details to convey casualness and a different more classy font for the mast head so that it sticks out.

School Magazine photography

For my version of the school magazine,
the lighting and effects i would use are of a variety, them being:

  • low on shot- I would want to give the students an impression of superiority or importance for a change.
  • Head on shot- For the successful interaction between the picture and reader and to connote confidence
  • High on shot- For students to be able to relate to the picture, because many times the students feel inferior.
I want to use all the different lighting techniques so that the pictures can portray different moods and situations.I want the magazine to be of a variety. I might mainly use natural and face lighting.

Weekly Journal(2)

This week was a basic introduction into finding what the audience of our own school magazines would be and what they would want in the magazine. We made questionnaires after deciding on our target audience and tried to find out what their personal preferences and opinions are on what a magazine should contain so that it would appeal to people of that age group. I found out the results which were very general and supportive of the ideas. I made a power point presentation on what my target audience and what they might want, i also included a draft of the school magazine cover.

Survey Results

The presence of a school magazine is not well known and rarely do a few students read it.
Most agreed to a new weekly magazine published by the students, which is friendly and consists of activities and results that include the students. A clear majority wanted that the magazine should be one that consists of news and updates of all school activities and subjects and should also consist of sections on the partnership schools. There were many who agreed to the idea of the school's students and teachers to feature on the cover page. The idea of having a section to clear the doubts of the students was not as well accepted as the others.

Weekly Journal (1)

This week we were introduced to magazines in general. We spoke about all the different genres that magazines are based on and which common features can be spotted among them.We then selected a genre and tried analyzing it's basic features (only the cover).Later on that week we tried making our magazine cover using Photoshop. This week gave me a basic idea of how a magazine cover would and should look like.

Magazine Cover Analysis (Q magazine- music)

     It has  a specific house style- The colours black,red and white are used, these colours are bold and stand out hence they appeal to people who are bold and confident.
      •Left third has all or most of the  information.
      •There is always one dominant picture of a celebrity or few celebrities(band). The magazine always features them and they are used to catch the attention of the audience.
       •She/he looks directly at the camera.The woman is made to look like a sex symbol while the man is made to look more casual or relatable not.
       •They use white as a dominant colour to catch attention.

       •There’s always a barcode and dateline.
          Q magazine aims to attract an audience range from teenagers to people in their thirties.
They feature many genre musicians on their covers: rock, pop and metal.
They use language and fonts that are friendly , casual and more appealing to the readers.
Except for black, all the colours used are bright and attractive.
They mostly feature current news.
Their masthead is always in the left third along with most of their articles.
The masthead is also used as a symbol/logo and is ‘Q’ because they felt that a short masthead would be more prominent and easy to remember.
The masthead doesn't overlap the picture.
Red and white(used in the masthead) are also their featured colours in which red denotes passion for music and white denotes goodness

Mock Magazine

I used photoshop and a random picture from google images for this mock magazine cover.
I used a combination of tools and effects to achieve this, and they are-
  • I had three layers.
  • I changed the saturation,exposure and brightness/contrast.
  • After selecting the background layer, i changed the colour of the background to grey.
  • I used the text too for the masthead- 'The Extraordinary'.
  • I used the sharpen tool for the eyes.
  • I used filter and lighting effects for the spotlight effects and then faded it.
